Did you know that kindergarten isn't mandatory for children in Illinois? Imagine the difference between the students who have had the opportunity to be exposed to life skills, concepts, and strategies, versus students who have never had exposure to any of these. As you can picture, the difference is drastic. I teach kindergarten to a very diverse group. My classroom has 22 students with a wide range of ethnicities, ability levels, and support from home. Some of my students attended preschools where they were exposed to some schooling, while others never had any exposure resulting in them starting the school year "behind" their peers. While kindergarten may seem like an unimportant grade, it's far from that! Kindergarten has changed since the days where all students did was nap and play.
