In order to increase my students' vocabulary and fluency, I would like to provide my students with sets of books accompanied with CDs to read and listen along. During our Guided Reading class every day, my students will be able to listen along to the book of their choice using headphones. A listening center will provide a group of students the opportunity to hear the excellent fiction and non-fiction texts come to life and then answer questions about the texts. Students will be able to follow along with their fingers in order to gain new vocabulary and sight words that otherwise would have hindered their comprehension of the texts. In order to provide them an opportunity to listen to stories being read to them, this project will provide the supplies for my students to gain more reading experiences in my classroom. Many of my students do not have the opportunity or materials to read with their family members after school in their homes. In addition, about half of my readers are English Language Learners where the language spoken at home is Spanish but they speak and learn in English all day. According to January 2017 reading testing for my students, 40% of them are reading on or above grade level. This listening center will provide an opportunity for all English Language Learners and low-level readers to have stories captivate them through listening comprehension. Both English Language Learners and low-achieving readers will work towards decreasing a word gap and comprehension disconnect while using the Listening Center books, CDs, and earbuds.
