My students are going to be doing field work in our community to find a way to make an impact, and make our community a better place. The book Sofia's War is a great opener for kids to see that someone their age can really make a difference in the world. Creating mindful citizens who are confident and capable to make change is the goal of this project. Students will identify a need and create their own service projects. They will learn how to navigate the system of local, state, and national governments to bring about change. They will collect and analyze data, interview experts, write a proposal and persuasive letters, and create a presentation for a public viewing. Students will learn presentation skills and present their proposals to an appropriate committee, school board or city council. Reading Sophia's War is just the first step in this yearlong project, but it will allow students to connect American history to their own lives. Sophia made an impact on the course of history. She will inspire students to make an impact In their own communities.
