Durable Books for Nonverbal Aac Users!
Funded Jul 29, 2024The elementary school where I work has learners of all abilities, including nonverbal students who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to communicate. This may look like tablets with apps that produce speech, CORE boards with basic vocabulary and specific vocabulary, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), and so on.
All students deserve books to read, and by your generosity, my nonverbal students are able to explore these durable board books, work on their communication skills with their devices, and practice their print awareness and literacy skills! Giving these children a durable book to hold with their own hands, turn the pages without fear of ripping them, and be a part of the literacy process gives them more independence, ownership, and motivation to learn and grow! You are a part of this process and I am so grateful.
My lessons with these durable books have included interacting with print - pointing to words, the title, numbers on the pages; communicating about the books and building vocabulary - labeling characters, objects, places, and events in stories; and commenting and reflecting on the books - phrases like "I like it" or "I don't like it" which are functional and social!
I could not do it without you - so thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

Ms. Megan
Durable Board Books for a Nonverbal Child
Funded Jan 12, 2024Thank you so much for your generosity! You are making a difference in the life of my student with complex communication needs.
Having durable books is so important and you have provided a wealth of knowledge for her. These books are being used EVERY DAY! We use her communication device to identify things we see in the books, and talk about colors, numbers, animals, and so on! She is engaged and gets to pick which one she wants to read, physically hold her books, and turn their pages. They are durable and the thick pages help her to grip and move them successfully.
Thank you again for providing this student opportunities to learn and grow in her communication skills.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Megan

Funded Nov 29, 2022Thank you so much for your incredible donation. You are providing games and books for speech students who need it! Your generosity is so appreciated. I am so excited for my students to read with me, and be motivated by the fun games.
It is so important for students to read in their native language, and so many of the students on my speech/language caseload are bilingual. My students will be able to see characters who share similar cultures, and read in Spanish, which is so exciting! I have a small collection and I know my students will be thrilled to get new books. We will work on retelling stories, sequencing narratives, speech sounds, and more!
The games will add a fun factor to speech therapy sessions. It can be difficult for students to work on sounds that they usually make in error, and I hate when I see my students are struggling with a challenging sound. Providing them with fun games to keep them motivated and engaged is such a blessing! You have given them the opportunity to keep practicing their tricky sounds, while having a blast in speech!”

Funded May 5, 2022Thank you so much for your support and generosity for my students and me. As a speech therapist, my job is all about helping make communication more accessible for students with disabilities. Your support provided the materials for students with articulation disorders- when students do not produce accurate speech sounds, which affects how students are understood, their participation in class, and their confidence in themselves. Your generosity has helped provide articulation cards (cards with pictures and words) that students can use to drill their speech sounds (repeated trials to practice their target sound), and to play games (such as Go Fish, or memory) to keep them motivated and engaged in practice! I have already used them so many times this year alone, and I know my students appreciate having such high quality materials!
Thank you for being a part of my classroom this year!”

Funded May 4, 2022Thank you so much for your support and generosity in supporting my students and me! This made the end of the year so special (seeing encouraging posters on my walls, having fun pens as rewards for hard work, and playing games as an end of the year celebration!) All of my students made progress on their speech therapy goals this year and it has been a joy to be able to celebrate with them- thanks to you!
I have also really loved having the organization to keep my things in order (our hallway was under construction so we speech therapists got moved to a new office space with no desk, so the organizational bins have been EXACTLY what I needed), and I'm very grateful for a cleaning spray to make sure kids stay safe and healthy!
Thank you for being a part of this speech office!!!”
