  • Why Does That Car Move So Fast?

    Funded Oct 24, 2018

Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom.

Students learn and retain physics concepts at a greater rate through hands on activities. The science tools purchased through this campaign will greatly enhance my students’ understanding of the concepts of motion.

These tools will help my students directly in the next month as we do a major project studying friction, as well as a study of Newton’s laws.

The Chevron Fuel Your Schools campaign is an amazing program and is greatly appreciated by the teaching community”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Johnson

This classroom project was brought to life by Chevron Fuel Your School.
  • Track That Motion

    Funded Sep 17, 2018

Thank you for contributing to the "Track That Motion" campaign for my classroom though Donor's Choose.

My students are currently learning about the physics of motion including Newton's Laws. The equipment in this fundraising campaign works directly with their computers to help them collect and analyze data quickly. This helps them get to see real-world applications of detection devices and get a true tactile and visual experience to see how Newton's Laws work.

The students will be performing a project to design a surface which can help slow down an out of control vehicle. The parts purchased in this campaign will help them get a stronger understanding of friction and motion which will help them in their design projects.

Contributions from the community are a key driver which help me increase the hands on experiences in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Johnson

  • The Ups and Downs of Physics

    Funded Oct 12, 2018

I truly appreciate your support in helping provide equipment for the physics labs at our school.

This force plate is going to be an excellent tool for our students to observe Isaac Newton's Third Law in action. I am so excited to have this new tool available in my classroom. It is through the support of our community that we can make our school the excellent learning environment that we have.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Johnson

  • Tracking Motion - Let's learn Kinematics

    Funded Sep 4, 2018

Thank you for supporting our classroom with these dynamics cart and track systems.

Students in physics need to understand how forces interact and create motion. These systems help provide visual support for their text and lecture learning. In the photos, my students are learning how the force of gravity is translated into acceleration of the carts and how the angle of the track impacts this translation.

Later in the semester, we will be using these systems to investigate all three of Newton's laws of motion and to gain a better understanding of the conservation of momentum in collisions.

It is through your support that these students can get hands on experience to help understand the basics of motion.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Johnson

  • Hands-on Physics Fun

    Funded Oct 2, 2017

I truly appreciate your donation of this physics lab equipment.

The greatest impact was the visual presentation of the concept of independence of motion, where students got to see first hand that gravity impacts all objects in a similar fashion.

The centripetal force machine allowed my classes to investigate the effects of changing the distance from the center of rotation and speed of rotation on the force exerted on an object.

All hands on activities keep my students more engaged and enhance their learning experience.

    We truly appreciate your generosity”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Johnson

Understanding the laws of physics requires being able to visualize and practice with actual examples of what is going on in the real world. It is important to back up the math of physics with physical examples of how the laws work. The equipment in this request will help my students have the opportunity to experience the laws of physics involved with rotational movement and projectile motion. While using the equipment, they will need to apply the mathematical formulas in order to project the outcomes of experiments before they actually run the final test. This reinforces both their understanding of the math behind the physical laws AND their abilities to perform science through valid experimental techniques. These materials are focused on 2 particular topics in the physics curriculum: 1) The Projectile Launcher will help students learn how to calibrate a launching device and calculate projectile motion. They will follow this with a group project to build their own device which can be calibrated to hit a target. 2) The Centripetal Force Apparatus and Rotating platform will will give them experience with angular motion and momentum. The first of these will help them collect data on forces as objects go around curves. A project will follow on how roads or amusement parks use "banking" to make turns safer. The rotating table will allow students to experience centripetal force directly by using bicycle wheel gyroscopes (which I already have) to see how forces from the spinning wheel can cause them to rotate on the table. The Vernier GoLinks are parts required to allow the students to hook the electronic tools directly to their Laptops in order to collect data.
