What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Kindergarten?... CUBBIES!! Cubbies are used for storing morning snacks, homework, important go-home documents, jackets, and special Kindergarten treasures! My current Kindergarten classroom does not have cubbies and I am looking to get my students this resources. Cubbies allow for students to practice organizational skills and responsibility by remembering to take home items at the end of the day. When thinking of the layout of a Kindergarten classroom, it is important to think about the flow and intuitive layout so that children can operate independently and feel that the room was created to be a magical space for them to grow and learn. By having their very own cubby space, students feel a sense of community and their first experience being responsible for a space other than their room at home. Having a cubby space in a Kindergarten class also facilitates having a safe environment where a child does not go outside to their backpack on a hook but rather can gather important items within eyesight of an adult by using their cubby. Having had cubbies in previous Kindergarten classes, I can confidently say they make a difference in the students' lives by establishing a sense of ownership over their own learning and being responsible for a space of their own.
