Here was the idea. Over the summer, we had the pleasure of the first tee coming to our school to teach and work with our student on the game of golf. During that time, some of my students approached me in a joking manner, as they always do, and said how much better would this be if there were MEGA holes. I laughed and shrugged it off, but then got to thinking what a great idea they had, and so I came back to the students and told them this idea I had for full body soccer. They again told me we should have a MEGA ball. The Autistic mind is amazing. When I asked students what sports we could play with a MEGA ball, they simply responded with ALL OF THEM! We need Omnikin soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, volleyballs and Regular Omnikin balls. Getting the Omnikin balls would do so much good for my students. We already know how much research there is out there on physical activity and the effects it has on academics. Not only that, but my students are autistic and these balls will not only help with their gross and fine motor skills but with social skills as well during team oriented games. They are great for the sensory motor skills because they are colorful, soft and all different sizes. Our plan is to first learn the basic skills to the sport we are going to do. Then we wukk create together different lead up games using different techniques and body parts to play the same sport! Lastly, the kids want to create this "full body sport." For example, with soccer we will use the big Omnikin ball and play "full body soccer" by allowing the kids to use their hands, feet, knees, shoulders, head, and whatever other body part they can to get the same result of scoring into the goal!
