This year, we have launched a student news program to increase communication and create a stronger sense of community. We produce a 10-minute long news program that is shown school-wide four days a week. In our brief existence, the impact of the news program has been tremendous. For the crew, it has given them a truly authentic learning opportunity in terms of journalism and broadcasting. For the student body, it has significantly increased school spirit and fostered a sense of unity. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSGJ6yt5ktW1KdM-VMHhzvA How we operate: Our news crew is made up of 30 students who meet with us during advisory four days a week for 30 minutes and before school once a week for approximately an hour. This is a very tight timeframe considering all that has to be accomplished to meet our broadcasting deadlines, so we have broken the overall crew up into four smaller crews, one for each day we air (Tuesday-Friday.) We have more than enough manpower to maintain the pace demanded by our news schedule. Our current struggle is that we are severely lacking the equipment necessary to give the student crew full autonomy of the show. We are at the moment functioning off of one video camera (provided by myself) and two iPads that were provided to my co-sponsor and I by our district for use in our classrooms. My co-sponsor and I are doing most of the editing on our personal laptops. Initially, I was going to request video cameras for students. But when I saw that there was only a marginal difference in the cost of a quality camera and an iPad, the decision was easy. Not only can students record content with the iPads, they can also edit it themselves.
