While in 3rd grade, students are expected to expand their vocabulary when reading. They must practice using word-reference materials such as a dictionary and a thesaurus. My students will use the dictionaries to practice locating guide words and finding word definitions. They will use the thesaurus to discover synonyms for words they already know. Most of my students do not possess a hard copy of a dictionary at home, so their individual class copy will be a vital vocabulary building tool. As their vocabularies increase, so will their reading comprehension which will ultimately lead to better grades and academic success!
