Students need ways to sit (or stand) to keep them moving and engaged in their learning in any way that they can. My students have previously expressed how it is hard to sit still and focus on their reading or writing while sitting at a table in a traditional chair. Movement in the classroom is a big deal for my students and they constantly wiggle and dance from subject to subject. We need more than just the traditional 5-minute "brain break" in order to best focus on our work. My students have been able to choose where they'd like to work the most and the most popular choices have been on the carpet with a clipboard or in my teacher's rocking chair. Giving the students more choices of their own seating will give my Kindergarteners ways to move while they learn, keep them engaged, as well as give them ownership and responsibility for their own learning. My class suggested that I try to find other choices of chairs and places to sit so others could learn better. Flexible seating choices, such as balance balls and bean bag chairs, will allow the students to move around the classroom, make informed decisions about how they focus best, problem solve conflicts with others, and will increase their activity level throughout the day! My future class of Kindergarteners thanks you in advance for your generosity and for caring about their education!
