Studies prove that flexible seating is not only a great option but a necessary change to improve health and learning. My students will benefit greatly from a change in the typical American classroom. As adults, we cannot sit in the same place for more than 7 hours comfortably, so why do we expect 7-8-year-olds to do the same? Flexible seating is sitting: on the floor (carpeted or tile), over/under a blanket, pillow, or lap-sized bean bag, on a couch, on stools that move up and down, on bouncy balls, on scoop rocker chairs, on raised chairs, standing, or even lying down on their tummies or backs!
