Yoga benefits young children in various ways. Preschoolers are confronted daily with emotional, social, and physical challenges. Yoga helps to develop self-awareness in the body through deep breathing and movement. Children that have a strong body awareness are more secure and strong. The practice of yoga can help to ease anxiety. Better yet, it helps to enhance concentration, comprehension and memory. Many of my students have difficulty with self-regulation, which can often lead to hyperactive and perceived aggressive behaviors. Proper yoga materials would have great benefit to my classroom. Yoga teaches breathing techniques and poses that require stillness, it teaches a child to become more self aware. I currently use small carpets squares purchased at a dollar store. They serve the purpose of defining individual space, however the space that these carpet squares define is not sufficient. A yoga mat is meant to represent the space in which our minds can experience relief from the chaos of daily living. A yoga mat provides better traction when performing poses. Positioning yourself for many yoga postures requires feet to be planted on the ground. Having good traction can prevent injury from slipping. This is why I would love to have actual yoga mats available for my students. New mats, along with new videos and visual cards to engage them in learning would be such an asset to my classroom! Just as many of my student benefit from the calmness yoga brings, many would also benefit from the use of a trampoline. Children with special needs are prone to feelings of anxiety and can become overwhelmed quickly. A trampoline can be used to relieve some of those hidden feelings. Each child learns differently, therefore different learning tools are necessary within a special education setting!
