I write, students write, they erase, they rewrite, they study, they learn, and we celebrate. It is amazing how many revisions it takes for students to correctly copy and comprehend the information presented on Post-it Posters. Each revision requires perseverance and resources. A sophomore started the year unable to write or recite the alphabet without missing four letters. Tears came to her faster than theories or equations, and she shut down. I felt like the posters were futile until she smiled because I mispronounced a Spanish word. I allowed myself to be vulnerable, and allowed her to understand that mistakes are alright. I sent her home with a dry erase board, three pencils, a roll of whiteout tape, and a giant eraser. After months of studying, practicing, and revision, her improvement is worthy of celebration. As a teacher that also serves as the Homework Center Coordinator, I noticed that Orange County's high expectations force fixed mindsets to hamper students at an early age. One student told me that she just didn't get math. I told her that I didn't either as I grabbed a white board. We shared a laugh as I frantically searched for an eraser only seconds into the problem. Today, she still attends the Homework Center. More importantly, she still tries. Other students said they were not test takers, so I sent them home with flashcards and an invitation to study with friends and family. I cannot promise that these materials will perfect all of the problems in education today. I can promise that these materials will encourage my students and me to keep trying.
