Each year I have students do an assignment where they have to research the latest advances in technology. I learn a lot from this assignment too! One of the advances students researched was the use of virtual reality equipment in education. While students were happy to learn about all the fun applications available in virtual reality, they were surprised to learn about all the educational applications for this equipment. Students found one app called Surgeon Simulator, where you get to perform operations. There are all types of educational simulation games: Car mechanic, flight attendant, construction worker, ambulance, electrician, gaming construction, and doctor simulations are a few of the available apps that will allow students to explore careers. There are also apps related to core subjects such as 3-D Solar System, The Body VR, cells and dissecting. Due to COVID-19, students have missed several job shadowing field trips where they learned about different careers. Having this VR equipment will fill the gap with what students missed and will enhance their learning while exploring careers. This will also provide some much-needed fun that will positively affect their social and emotional learning.
