  • Give a Voice. Be Their Voice.

    Funded Apr 4, 2017

Everyone deserves the opportunity to have a voice. With your support in purchasing an iPad, I have been able to provide that voice for many of my preschool kiddos. The iPad has been used for a variety of purposes and populations in the preschool classrooms. For my most moderate to severe students (cognitive and/or physical disabilities), the iPad has been used to teach the concept of cause and effect, which is such a critical piece for communication. It has also been used as a practice and evidence-based tool for my kiddos to receive dedicated devices through insurance. The iPad has allowed these students to work on utilizing an isolated point with their fingers, to make their own choices for words, and to develop their own independent vocabulary. While the iPad has been particularly useful for this population of students, it has also done incredible things for the less severe populations.

The less severe disabilities that the iPad has been utilized for includes: autism, articulation/phonological errors, and English Language Learners. The iPad has been a huge motivator for these populations, which has made more of an impact than I can ever express. The applications on the iPad allows for targeting of specific skills while keeping the kiddos engaged/attentive to what I am teaching. Examples of the applications I most frequently use to improve these kiddos communication skills are: (1) social stories that teach children with autism how to interact appropriately with their peers, (2) articulation flashcards that target incorrect speech sounds so that they are more understandable to listeners and (3) environmental settings (farm, zoo, classroom, kitchen, etc.) that focus on common and familiar words produced in English. The outcomes of these applications have been extraordinary; however, there is one very significant outcome the iPad has sparked in my classrooms that I would have never foreseen.

Rather unexpectedly, the iPad has created such a sense of community/collaboration between the students with disabilities and their typically developing peers. Most, if not all children, whether they have disabilities or not, truly enjoy exploring and learning with technology. This commonality has established a comforting place for these two differing populations to interact and work together. While using with the iPad, the students often have one major goal to achieve, which provokes them to encourage and support one another (no matter who they are). It has taught students skills such as turn-taking/sharing and recognizing that differences in people are a positive things. It is amazing that even preschoolers can be aware of this unique world that we all live in. I wish I could thank you personally and that you could see firsthand the impact your donation has had on my little ones. I do not have enough words to display my sincerest gratitude and appreciation. I assure you that you are making a difference in my students lives and a BIG one at that. Thanks for being a voice.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Miller

Many of my students are non-verbal and/or are unable to communicate effectively due to the disabilities they present with. With increasing high-tech options available, alternate means for communication are becoming extremely popular within the special needs population. Sadly, most health insurance companies do not cover high-tech communication devices, such as iPads or tablets; therefore, families are left to fund these on their own. And they are not cheap. With providing my students the opportunity to trial different communication software on an iPad, you are allowing me to prove to insurance companies that these children NEED these devices to develop language/communication. I am not able to do that at this time as I do not have consistent access to an iPad. With your help, you are giving my students the potential to have a VOICE they may never have otherwise. Think about how much you speak on a daily basis and how hard it would be to go through life without that ability. You can make a difference, a huge difference.
