Current Events through Scholastic News
Funded Nov 29, 2016Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Your donations have given my students the opportunity to explore current events at the local, national, and worldwide levels. This is the first time my students have a subscription to Scholastic News and Science Spin.
These magazines are a great tool! They come with short videos (Scholastic.com) to support the main article in the magazines. Both magazines come with graphic organizers which help students organize their thoughts and improve their critical thinking skills.
Our learning focus is to identify the main idea and supporting details in nonfictional text. The magazines are the perfect tool! We preview the article by watching the short video, we identify text features used with the article, then read and discuss. We always use a graphic organizer to to help us summarize. This is an important skill that is practiced all year long as it is one of the state standards for fourth graders. With these magazines, my students are motivated and interested in reading and writing about current affairs while improving their language skills, writing skills, acquiring new vocabulary, and improving reading comprehension skills.
Every week we look forward to our Scholastic News magazine and read it from front to back. Thank you again for giving my students this learning experience!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Munoz
