  • Livestream Tech

    Funded May 9, 2023

Thank you for supporting our fundraising project. We are a school in New York City, and every bit of support we can get is extremely helpful.

My students run the school newspaper, and they have received national acclaim for the work they have done. However, despite their awards and honors, we have a very limited budget, and it is difficult to accomplish what they are capable of without additional help.

The livestream equipment you have helped us fund is going to go a long way towards supporting our students. Live-streaming is an essential part of current media expectations, and we have more and more demand from our community to cover their events.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Sweeney

  • A New Camera for The Classic

    Funded May 12, 2023

Thank you for supporting our fundraising project. We are a school in New York City, and every bit of support we can get is extremely helpful.

My students run the school newspaper, and they have received national acclaim for the work they have done. However, despite their awards and honors, we have a very limited budget, and it is difficult to accomplish what they are capable of without additional help.

The camera you have helped us fund is going to go a long way towards supporting our students. They use it to cover events, film podcasts, and livestream major school activities. It has already received a great deal of use, and we will use it nearly every day this school year. Thank you so much.”

  • Computer for NYC English Classroom

    Funded Dec 13, 2011

Thank you so much for your generosity. Over the past few weeks, I have started using the student computer that you helped fund in my classroom and have seen immediate results.

There is a website we have paid to access which provides individualized assignments for my students based upon their learning styles. Now, rather than having all my students work in their notebooks during a lesson, I can send some to the back of the room to use the new computer to learn through Online activities. This holds their attention well and motivates the other students to work hard at their desks in order to be next in line.

I have loaded the Kindle application on this computer. This gave my class library access to an additional 15,000 free texts for independent reading. The students are clamoring to use the laptop during reading time and to have their choice from this incredible selection of eBooks. Each week, I select a new student to use the computer for their free reading time and they are loving it.

We also do a lot of writing during class time, which students are expected to eventually type up and hand in. During writing periods, I now have a student using the computer instead of his or her notebook. Each day someone else gets a chance. Now, rather than typing their work up in addition to writing it out during class, students can email their drafts to themselves from the class computer and access their typed drafts at home.

Overall, I have only just started to see the rewards that this computer will bring to the learning environment in my classroom, and I'm sure that I will see far more benefits accrue as time goes on. Thank you!

  • Print Cartridges!

    Funded Oct 26, 2011

Thank you so much for your generosity. Over the past few weeks, I have started using the ink cartridges that you helped fund in my classroom and have seen immediate results.

I have one student, for instance, who consistently needs to use the local library to print up reports. She now is able to make use of this resource frequently throughout the week. Sometimes you add something to a classroom and only a few students partake of an opportunity, but this is something that many students have an obvious need for and I can already see that it's making a real difference. Though I am not the science teacher, some of them use this printer to print up the lab reports they need to bring to science class. I'm sure a few of these students might not bring in the lab without this option. Now they are more likely to do work in class.

Items like these might seem everyday and basic, but something as simple as a usable printer is actually far more important than a lot of the big deal technological devices that other schools might crave. Overall, I have only just started to see the rewards that this will bring to the learning environment in my classroom, and I'm sure that I will see far more benefits accrue as time goes on. Thank you!”

  • Computer for NYC English Classroom

    Funded Dec 22, 2010

Thank you so much for your generosity. Over the past few weeks, I have started using the student computer that you helped fund in my classroom and have seen immediate results.

I have one student, for instance, who frequently hands in projects late. He is one of the few students in my class who does not have a home computer and needs to take a trip to the public library to type up and print reports. This usually discourages him, so he doesn't hand anything in. Since I began using the computer in class, he has asked to come to my room during his lunch period to type up projects for my class and other classes as well. He could, of course, use his public library or even the school library, but something about having a computer available in the class motivates him. Just yesterday, I was letting him type up his essay during class and he asked if he could continue working on it during lunch; it's not due for another week but using the computer made him want to keep at it.

In addition, there is a website we have paid to access which provides individualized assignments for my students based upon their learning styles. Now, rather than having all my students work in their notebooks during a lesson, I can send some to the back of the room to use the new computer to learn through online activities. I teach at a middle school in Queens, New York--the most diverse county in America. I teach 157 students every day, spread out across five classes. These 157 students are not slackers. They do their work. They try very hard. Behavior has never been a major issue in my classes. They love math and science, but I find that it difficult to motivate them to read worn out books in a world where the eBook is gaining prominence. Their reading scores are not nearly as high as their math scores. Many colleagues believe the current generation just doesn't have the attention span of previous generations because they're so inundated with technology, but I believe that we just haven't figured out how to use technology to grab their attention. My students love to read websites, but they don't consider that to be "real" reading. They love to write text messages, but they don't consider that real writing. I want to bring technology into class to show them how they can use it to learn.
