Being in a charter school, my kindergarteners have one of the longest school days in the state, with minimal recess time. They come to class at 8:00, and get dismissed at 3:35 daily. They receive P.E once a week, and truly thrive while being active. Having flexible seating in my class will give students the option to move around from space to space, while being fully engaged in the learning process. In years past, I have seen a huge increase in student attention and work when I allow them to work in spaces other than their desk seat, such as kneeling, lying on the floor, standing with a clipboard, etc. I would love to give my students more comfortable options to work at while they show their knowledge and expertise in content areas, since we have concrete flooring in our classrooms. I have asked for "wiggle chairs" as a seating option for those little ones who have a hard time sitting during guided reading. Some students tend to focus more on going from kneeling, to sitting, to bouncing rather than the task at hand, and I these chairs would allow them to literally wiggle while they learn! Guided reading is a very important time of the day, but being 5 and 6 years old, it can be hard to stay focused and still for a 25 minute period in a small group. The bean bag chairs would be a great addition to my reading corner, where students can get comfy and focus on finding sight words, and begin to read for comprehension. Lastly, the floor pillows would give one more places for students to move around to, and learn and listen while being comfortable in my classroom. I plan on implementing these at a "sitting table" where students can excel.
