I do intervention work in both reading and math, and research has shown that children learn better when the lessons are interactive. The materials I would be receiving enable my lessons to be just that. All children learn differently, including children who receive special education services. The materials requested would make that differentiation so much easier to achieve, and in turn make the curriculum more accessible for my students. The math manipulatives, for example, would make ordinarily abstract math lessons tactile and fun. The high interest/low level books would very much help make reading fun and engaging for those students who are struggling. Children deserve to get the best possible schooling experience, regardless of their circumstances, and these supplies would start my third graders down that road of equity.
