I am requesting materials for creating a fence to define a school and community garden that is designed as a learning garden to support the Sciences, Language Arts, Math and Social Studies, and create yet another path for families to actively engage in their students’ school life. Many of our students are 1st generation Americans who have come to us as refugees. Often their parents have not had the educational experiences that we in this country take for granted. With this lack of familiarity, comes a tentativeness that a universal activity like growing your own food can help overcome. A school/ community garden is an invitation to students and families to find common ground and delight in an experience-based education here at Prairie Heights, while directly seeing and reaping the rewards of growing their own food. Facilities for the district has given us a broad area we can use and have made a commitment of water. A grant from our City, and nursery will help supply the soil amendments required. We need only mark out our first phase with a fence and let our teachers, students, and families in to take ownership and with a little guidance, do the rest.
