Flexible seating has been shown to be beneficial to success in a growing amount of the student population. Giving students choices and not restricting them to one type of seat allows for movement in the classroom. Providing options is another layer to foster success in the classroom. I want to make my classroom a place where the students feel motivated and feel like there is no place else they would rather be at that moment. We ask a lot of our younger students. Giving them seating choices is something that gives them freedom and lets them have some ownership of their classroom experience. The flexible seating will be used as both incentive and a shared tool. The seats will be used at the guided reading table, where I work with students in a small group for guided instruction. The wobble seats and balls will be divided up among our table groups. The table captain (which rotates daily) will be be able to chose one to use for the day. The other seats will be used at centers, where the students are allowed to work independently to reinforce and apply strategies that have been taught previously. Having flexible seating is another way to engage our early learners and allow them to focus while staying engaged.
