  • Tools for Getting Woke!

    Funded Aug 12, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donation and your support of SJHA's hard working students. My students are back to school and they have begun engaging in discussions about self-actualization and resisting oppression in preparation for reading the books your donation helped to fund. Thank you so much for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siegeler

  • Understanding the 8 Stages of Genocide

    Funded Mar 7, 2017

Thank you for supporting the growth and development of my students and community through your generous donations. We used Night to understand the ways difference is engineered and used to exert power over people. We explored the ways othering is used to take rights from people and to justify their exploitation.

We explored the rejection of Syrian refugees by many countries and paralleled this contemporary issue with the rejection of Jewish refugees during the holocaust. Students analyzed the complexities of countries centralizing the security of their own people over the freedom of others.

I believe that students learned not only the history, but critically explored the social dynamics that recur and how they can engage in action to interrupt these destructive patterns.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siegeler

  • Support Students for Social Movements

    Funded Aug 4, 2016

    Dear Generous Donors,

Thank you so much for contributing to the "Support Students for Social Movements" project that funded the purchase of textbooks centered on understanding societal power dynamics, people power, and the tools implemented by people and organizations fighting injustices. The textbooks purchased through this project have facilitated powerful dialogs, the production of compelling projects, and learning centered around issues my students face and resist daily.

Students have been empowered to join influential movements and to participate in activism.

Thank you for giving my students access to materials that they can use to change the world.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Siegeler

You have probably heard of a food desert... my school is in a book desert. Hosting book clubs is one way our school addresses fostering a love for reading in a book desert. Students who participate in book club receive 10 books each school year and for many students, this is the beginning of their own book collection. Once a month, we meet and the students engage in heated discussions about literature! Book club provides students the opportunity to read for fun and participate in a community of readers. Participating in Book Club provides a space for students to connect with not only characters in literature, but also each other.
