Not just another day in Paradise. At least not for Hawaii's Public Schools. I teach 9th Grade Language Arts in a place that many see as Heaven on Earth. What most people don't realize is that although (or maybe because, it depends on who you talk to) the people in my community are predominantly native Hawaiian, they are very poor. I have students that live on the beach, because the cost of living is so high. Many times there are three or four families living in one house. Over 50% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. However, despite all these setbacks, my class is full of bright, positive children that want the opportunity to learn and seek the comfort of a caring teacher to guide them along their way.
