I plan to use these new materials as a way to enhance my students learning. I want them to use the Magna Tiles to create build and explore to develop higher thinking skills through play based learning. In the dramatic play area the children will be able to use the doll stroller to develop their imagination. The malleable properties of play dough make it fun for investigation and exploration as well as secretly building up strength in all the tiny hand muscles and tendons, making them ready for pencil and scissor control later on. When they finish exploring the play dough, then they can continue the fun by using the jumbo pencils to draw pictures and create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. The wipe and write lapboards are for determining readiness. I start by writing a problem on the board and everyone solves the problem on their own boards without help. When finished, they turn their boards face down. Then I say “Show Me!” and they flip their boards over for me to review. Since my purpose is to assess readiness and background knowledge, I reveal the correct answers but I don’t take time to explain how I solved the problems. This quick check enables me to start my instruction at the right instructional level. Each of the other materials will benefit by students by stimulating their curiosity and creativity and an age appropriate level.
Children who complete an excellent pre-kindergarten program enter kindergarten not only prepared for new academic content, but also comfortable with school and excited to move forward. Having these materials will increase their creativity and build self esteem inside and outside the classroom. Having these pre-skills will make my students lives better for their entrance into kindergarten.
