Learning real life money skills will help our special education students toward the ultimate goal of independence. We make "Money Math" part of each day, and each week they are given a paycheck based on their academic averages and school wide jobs. The money they earn can be spent on items that I purchase for our classroom store, as well as classroom free time activities. In order to add online banking practice to our existing lessons, we are in need of 8 Kindle Fire tablets in order to use the MyKidsBank app. In order for our students to maximize their potential, they must master this technology in order to be prepared for managing the finances of a household one day. We already have the realistic play money materials, checkbooks and calculators. We use our money skills in bimonthly bake sales and community based trips. The only area that is lacking is the online banking piece. I feel I am doing my students a disservice in this day and age if I do not prepare them to bank online. These tablets would allow each student to repeatedly practice such things as logging in, checking balances, and making deposits etc. It would allow them to work toward mastery of a crucial step needed for independence.
