Life is What You Bake It!
Funded Jul 4, 2019In the short amount of time that we've been in school, my classroom already has transformed into the student-centered bakery I imagined when I created this project. The other day, ten of my students formed teams and worked together to measure and mix. They helped each other read the measuring cups and spoons; they took turns mixing their ingredients then incorporating them into the larger bowl. In the end, we had some delicious oatmeal chocolate chip cookies to share with the rest of the class!
Many of my students were unfamiliar with the various baking tools that we now have in our classroom. During our baking experience, they began to use words like whisk and measuring cups. They also learned how to properly read the measuring cups and measuring spoons. I think the chef aprons were the icing on the cake (ha!). Their faces lit up as they put them on. I'm excited to see my students become experts as we continue to bake this year!
Fractions are a big chunk of our math work in fourth grade, and I can't wait to refer back to our baking tools and experiences as we grow our understanding of the topic. I love that students will be able to see the real-world connection right in our own classroom.
I cannot thank you enough for your donations to this project. You have enabled my 28 students to create memories and learning opportunities they will never forget!”

Book Club Books & Audio Books!
Funded Dec 23, 2016Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom! As avid readers yourselves, I imagine you love the feeling of walking into a bookstore or cracking open a new book. The same is true for my students; they light up in the presence of new books. It turns into a friendly competition to snatch a book before a classmate does.
I have one student in particular who benefits from the audio books we've received. He gets overwhelmed by large texts and loses focus, but he loves to listen to books and sketch what he is hearing. He also loves to talk to me about the books he is hearing; it's heartwarming to see that he, too, can develop a love for books in a slightly different way.
Again, thank you so much. You have truly impacted my students in a positive way. They are so thankful for your contribution.”

Reading and Independent Work Nooks
Funded Sep 13, 2016Dear Donors,
We received our incredibly comfy chairs and rug last week. Everything was delivered during the school day, and the kids were in awe as the huge boxes arrived. It took a lot of self-control, on the part of students and adults alike, to not plop right down in one of the beanbag chairs.
We quickly developed a set of rules and expectations so that everyone has a chance to use the chairs on a regular basis. The kids take turns each day and take the system very seriously.
As expected, the chairs and rug enable my students to comfortably get lost in a story. I love watching them during independent reading time; it is powerful seeing them deep in their books. Many thanks again for your contribution. The kids are so grateful!”

Ms. Hartman
