  • Wobble while you work!

    Funded Dec 6, 2016

Wow! Thank you. I cant wait to let my students know that they will be able to "wobbble while they work!" I introduced 4 standing desks and seat cushions at the beginning of the school year, but with 28 students in my room at once it only allows a few to have an alternative to their hard deak chair at any one given time. I am slowly acquiring options to support the various types of learners in my class, but could not do it without your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Henry

  • Alternative Seating - Stand Up for Learning!

    Funded Aug 21, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Thank you for your generous donations. The new resources that we received have assisted me in creating a positive classroom community, where students are empowered to take control of their learning.

This year I have 28 - 2nd graders, so as you can imagine the classroom is a very busy place. The standing desks give students a place where they can go when they need a break from sitting and can continue working without disrupting others. When I first introduced the desks, very few students took advantage of them. Students were comfortable with sitting, as that is what has been the expectation of them in previous school classrooms - sit in your seat and be still. It took a few weeks for students to give it a try and begin to feel, for themselves, the benefit of standing while you work! They are very thankful for this new found freedom.

For students with ADHD, the standing desks are a tool that I have used to teach them to be advocates for themselves and their learning style. I have taught them that when their body is active, whether it be standing, balancing on the seat cushions, or squeezing a stress ball in their hand, their brain is able to attend to the information that is being presented. So, they know that when they are getting "restless" they have options (within limits) and they now advocate for what they need to be successful!

I believe that active students learn better. When students are less frustrated with academics, behaviors in the classroom improve and therefore the overall climate of a classroom is positive. This is the way I envisioned my 2nd grade classroom. I give much credit to the standing desks and balance seat cushions, which I would not have had without your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Henry

Students need alternatives to the hard desk chairs that are provided for them to use in the classroom. I am requesting funding to try two alternatives in my classroom this year-standing desks and stability balls. HealthNewsDigest.com released a study from the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health in April of 2015, titled We Think Better on Our Feet. Mark Benden, Ph.D., CPE, associate professor reports that "Standing workstations reduce disruptive behavior problems and increase students' attention or academic behavioral engagement by providing students with a different method for completing academic tasks (like standing) that breaks up the monotony of seated work. Considerable research indicates that academic behavioral engagement is the most important contributor to student achievement. Simply put, we think better on our feet than in our seat." I believe that placing standing desks in my classroom will help me "kill two birds with one stone": academic performance and childhood obesity. Students in my class with ADHD, sensory disorders, or ones that just need to move, will benefit greatly from using a stability ball instead of a regular desk chair. Research confirms that the balls helps students stay focused in class as well as improves their behavior by providing an outlet for restlessness and extra energy!
