I am beyond excited to have so many students who are such voracious readers! I encourage them to read during any breaks we may have in class and after they finish their work, but to be honest, they need very little encouragement from me in that department. Because they love to read so much, I want to do all that I can to provide them with access to books that are relevant and interesting. I want to nurture and celebrate this quality, and hopefully ignite a love for reading among my students that are a little reluctant.
My biggest problem this year is one I am happy to have: finding enough books to keep up with their appetite for reading! I have a classroom library, but most of the books are old and falling apart. I have selected four novels that we will read as a class over the course of the year: Wonder, Touching Spirit Bear, The Skin I'm In, and Among the Hidden. I purchased audio versions of the books, and we have already started listening to Wonder, but many of my students are requesting the actual book so that they may follow along with the audio recording, or read it at their own pace. Having classroom sets of the books would help increase the likelihood of comprehension, because not only will my students be able to hear the book, they will be able to see it and read along.
Finally, I would like the carpet and bean bags as a way to provide a classroom reward for students that go that extra mile. I would like to provide them with time to relax and enjoy reading after working hard during class time. Thanks so much for your help!
