The NDHS Honor Guard, Majorettes, and Drumline consist of 20-30 students. The goal is to have 30-50 participants for the team. Students are expected to maintain a satisfactory GPA, attendance, and display proper classroom behavior. If students do not meet the expectations, the staff does not use punitive measures. Rather, the students are given opportunities to grow. This includes the use of restorative circles, one to one counseling with a trusted staff member, and mandatory after-school study halls in which the students are given dinner. It is hypothesized that students who participate in these events will improve in both their academic environment and social environment. Participating in these events help the students become leaders in their school while preparing them for participation and leadership in the community. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students who participated in extracurricular activities displayed higher successes in their academic career than those students who did not ("Extracurricular Participation and Student Engagement," 1995).
The students of North Division High School are caught in a vicious cycle of urban poverty. Individuals who experience the dynamics of poverty have a much more difficult time of achieving success than their non-poverty counterparts. The neighborhoods in which many of our students live our ravaged with drugs, violence, and homelessness. When students participate in events such as this project, they are removed from the "street" environment. They are able to experience areas that they would have never thought imaginable. It is hypothesized that this will help students gain a better understanding of self-respect, a better appreciation for the community around them, and a better appreciation for the importance of education in their lives. the mission that we as a staff has, is to get our students involved in as many parades and events as possible throughout the United
