"Hungry? That's a country? I've heard of Turkey. But Hungry?" That's a line from the game show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" during celebrity week that I share with my students when working on the Europe political map. This line of global unawareness shows why young people must learn geography. I teach World Studies to 9th graders, which is a course that covers an expansive amount of world history and focuses heavily on learning world political and physical geography. I teach at a magnet urban Illinois high school in which more than half of the student body qualifies for the free and reduced lunch program.
