As an experienced educator returning to the classroom with very little materials, I want all my students to have materials that other parents are able to purchase. Students are bored with writing on white paper with a dull brown pencil. Immediately, I recognized that our school desk works with the whiteboard markers for easy writing on the desk. My students have become fully engaged by introducing this routine in just two lessons by writing on the desks their math solutions bringing an increased participation to many periods of 100%! The first part of becoming a great math student is "doing" the math as a learner. Whiteboard markers are expensive for any classroom teacher and sometimes students mistakenly push in the ink by pressing too hard. In need of color pencils, crayons and scissors, will add to the effective use of math interactive notebooks that integrates reading strategies such as highlighting topics and clues, cutting out diagrams and gluing to the notebook, or simply coloring part of a constructive classroom. I am able to immediately assess those students needing additional support. As a teacher unfamiliar with the Spanish names, I have my students write their names on the desk and this helps me recognize students by name as I teach approximately 250 students. They appreciate that I am quickly learning their names. These tools are great for my students with exceptional learning needs and those developing the English language. It will allow them to express their math ideas using interactive guides, math study guides, and math diagrams in COLOR!
