Research shows that alternative seating can improve student focus, increase participation, and motivate learners. I feel that it is important for students to have input and choice in where they work in the classroom. According to the research, alternative seating: 1. makes students more actively engaged in the classroom 2. gives them an active outlet without disrupting their learning 3. motivates students to want to come to school 4. helps those with ADHD and Autism, along with other special needs 5. helps develop a sense of community among the students which improves their social skills 6. helps them to become independent learners I know I prefer different work spaces depending on what I'm doing. When I'm planning, I'm usually spread out on the floor of my living room. I'm more productive when I'm comfortable - why wouldn't the same be true for my students? I would like to provide the following seating options for my students: - Tables with yoga ball seats for students who need to move more than others. - Lap desks for students who prefer to sit on the floor rather than at a desk. - Stools to use at tables that are raised up so students can work while standing.
