My students are tremendously inspired by learning about animals and helping the environment as they have been continuously learning about all the factors of habitat destruction this year. They have recently learned about the declining rate of Monarch Butterflies. In doing so, they proposed their own idea of solving the problem here at school by building a garden and planting seeds that will attract and become a sanctuary or waystation for monarch butterflies! This project will make such a difference for them and for our school as a whole. This year they have learned a great deal about habitat destruction and some small ways they can help out, but never did they believe they could make a real difference in building an actual habitat right here at school. Our school also has no landscaping, no plants or flowers. There is no playground other than chipped paint on the concrete parking lot that used to be where the children played hopscotch. I believe giving my children the opportunity to beautify their own school will make them even more invested in progressing our school culture and community as well. I want to make this idea of theirs a reality, but am in need of supplies to put this project in action.
