My diverse, enthusiastic middle school art students are most engaged in my classroom after we've all put in the work to learn new technical vocabulary, applied those words to analyze other artists' work and done some discussing, brainstorming, and sketching. The preparation and planning pays off when students start making art. The classroom alternates between periods of quiet focus and the chatter of students freely sharing ideas and asking each other for advice. This state of flow and the reward of looking at the finished artworks that follow is why I teach. Developing the confidence and skill to make and appreciate art gives all students a voice. Art inspires collaboration, kindness and activism in my students. Sometimes former students return to to excitedly share their latest artworks. There are few places more rewarding than my art classroom.
