My school is made up of predominantly students that receive free and reduced-price lunches. In fact, all of our students receive free lunches. It is necessary to provide as many opportunities for our students as possible as many of them cannot provide the materials needed to be successful in the technology-driven 21st century. Many of our families find it difficult to provide basic necessities. At the same time, it is imperative that our students not only learn how to maneuver the “technology highway” but also learn to be creative problem solvers who can communicate about math in a more open discussion environment. Learning from each other and about each other makes our class an inviting place to be.
The use of LCD tablets in my room has the ability to make math a little less scary. Students will be able to see how others think. They have the power to open up classroom discussion about solutions given to tasks presented during class. Discussion in a math classroom is essential to learning taking place. Thought processes are uncovered and the discovery that everyone does not have to think alike Is powerful.
