At the end of last school year, I began exploring the idea of flexible seating by giving my students the freedom to choose where in the classroom they would like to work. I was so pleasantly surprised at how this choice affected their engagement and attention! Students were able to spread out to work independently, something they had been unable to do while seated at a table. They were also able to find a place in the room to work cooperatively in groups. I had more students willing to spend time reading while laying on their tummies than sitting at their desks. Most importantly, they were able to CHOOSE the style that was best for them. Because my students were engaged, I was able to spend more of my instructional time working with small groups of students and meeting their needs at their levels. This year, I would like to continue with flexible seating options such as bean bags, wobble seats, and lap desks, while giving students the opportunity to be comfortable! I want my students to feel "at home" in my classroom. When I sit down to work or read, I rarely sit at a desk or table. I find that I am most productive when I am curled up on my couch. I hope to give my students a place to feel comfortable and enjoy their learning.
