Students work on tasks all day long both at school and at home. Being in a seat that is not comfortable or conducive to the task can make the work even harder. This project will diminish the feelings of confinement and break up the occasional monotony that sets in when sitting in a desk all day. With flexible seating, ball chairs, floor cushions, bouncy bands, and wobble cushions, my students can sit wherever they like! If they prefer to stand, or take a cushion and sit on the floor, the choice is theirs.
The simple choice of how to work can lead to brilliant outcomes.
Research has shown that when students have the power move about as they learn the brain is more engaged and focused on the task. Students should be able to work in a manner that best fits their energy level. Flexible seating is good for the body, but it is also good for the mind. Flexible seating can lead to improved grades, and more meaningful and invigorating discussions.
A student-centered classroom works, and flexible seating is the first step in creating a classroom all about the students. The students have the choice to decide where they work best, and are aware of how they learn and work! Talk about helping students become more self aware!
