  • Battle of the Bookworms

    In our classroom, the introduction of new texts has opened up exciting avenues for both skill development and deeper engagement with literature. One of the most significant skills students are working on is analyzing themes and character motivations across different genres. The new books have varied in both tone and structure, allowing students to practice comparing narrative techniques and understanding how themes are developed in diverse contexts. For example, some texts have encouraged students to look closely at the role of setting in shaping character decisions, while others have prompted them to consider symbolism and its contribution to a larger message. These lessons not only enhance critical thinking but also push students to articulate their thoughts more clearly and back up their interpretations with textual evidence.

    Reading in our classroom has become more interactive and dynamic with these new texts. We often break into small groups for guided discussions, allowing students to engage in peer-to-peer learning while practicing their analytical skills. This format encourages students to ask questions, share perspectives, and refine their ideas based on the insights of others. Some of the students who seem especially drawn to the new books are those who have a keen interest in fantasy and science fiction. For them, the complexity of world-building and the moral dilemmas presented in these genres spark thoughtful debates and allow for deeper exploration of character arcs. In March, my classroom was turned upside down. Learning was no longer happening in a school setting, but instead students were learning virtually in the comfort of their own homes. Throughout the next few months, my students and I discovered e-learning together. We met over Google Meets, Zoom, and YouTube Live. Over time, it became clear that my students were most successful when they were able to learn in a distraction free environment. With siblings and parents working, often in the same room, my students struggled staying focus on their lessons. During virtual meetings, I often found it challenging to hear my students clearly because of the quality of the microphones on the devices that they were using. My students were already learning to find their voice behind their screen and when their microphones malfunctioned, it only made connecting with them more complex. Headphones with a built in microphone have the power to fix these difficulties that we faced. By donating to this project, you will not only help my students maintain their focus throughout our daily lessons, but you will be giving them a voice in our virtual classroom My students will receive their very own headphones to create a distraction free environment while they are remote learning. Remote learning is a new concept for all of my students. Creating a remote learning space is going to be imperative to ensure that all of my students are set up for success. Part of that learning space includes quality headphones that the students are able to use on a daily basis in order to connect with me and their classmates!
