I am very excited to start a new journey this academic year. I have been teaching 1st grade for three years and this will be my first year teaching in Spanish. I need to build a classroom library and guided reading library that will help my students build their Spanish vocabulary. A high-quality classroom library provides students access to not just any books but the right books—books that engage them as readers, support and scaffold them as they grow, build biliteracy skills, spark creativity and empathy, encourage them to think and act at higher levels and, of course, promote a lifelong love of literacy. The majority of the books that I have selected are key for the beginning of the year classroom read-alouds. Read-alouds provide me with an opportunity to share enthusiasm for reading while at the same time model early reading practices. I am a firm believer that when students are purposefully read aloud from texts that capture their interests and academic needs, students are more likely to become independent readers. I have also selected a variety of Guided Reading Spanish fiction and nonfiction books to provide my students with books at their reading level and interest so they may succeed in Spanish reading. This donation will be a building block that will help make the dual-language 90:10 model program a success in my classroom for my students. Muchas Gracias!
