The visiting poets will share their passion for and understanding of poetry with our students through sharing poems and working with students to compose their own poetry. The visit will culminate in an "open mic" event during which students will read their original poetry for their teachers and peers.
According to Andrew Simmons, writing for The Atlantic, poetry enables students to learn "how to write, read, and understand any text. Poetry can give students a healthy outlet for surging emotions. Reading original poetry aloud in class can foster trust and empathy in the classroom community, while also emphasizing speaking and listening skills."
