In my years of teaching I have learned that sometimes you need to let a student explore independently in order to best see what they have learned and what they still need help with. This is especially true in Kindergarten when some of the lessons you are teaching are not measurable. How do you measure a student's ability to problem solve? How they are able to communicate with their peers? How well they are able to share with their peers? Through independent play I am able to see what type of learner my students are developing into. I am able to measure their skills outside of a formal assessment. Seeing them build and create with their peers or watching them choose to simply sit quietly with a book I can quickly learn what type of person they are not only within the four walls of my classroom, but outside as well. This is my first year in this school and I am starting with a blank slate. The supplies I have requested will allow me to give students my students the ability to create and play independently from the moment they come into my classroom. From blocks to leveled readers, these supplies are not only age appropriate, but allow students to create and use their imagination without direct instruction from myself. I want to make sure that on the first day of school not only am I ready for my students, but my classroom is as well and by fulfilling my wishlist, I will be many steps closer to making that possible.
