As the reading and writing teacher of two classes in 5th grade, I see my students struggle to comprehend passages due to their lack of knowledge of simple word meanings. This challenge is especially magnified with my class of twenty-six ESOL students. They work hard as I instruct them in various ways to assist them in acquiring understanding of our language. Consistent practice is needed for the students' ultimate success in reading comprehension in all subject areas. My county uses the i-Ready program for reading and math practice. However, only three computers are allotted per classroom which makes it difficult to get all students on during the week during center rotations. The students enjoy working on the computers and eagerly look forward to this time daily. The "World's Worst Pet" is an i-Ready recommended vocabulary support program that ONLY WORKS on iPads. It targets only academic and domain-specific words in conceptually related clusters using game-based scenarios. The addition of the iPads will greatly benefit more students with consistent interactive practice during center rotations. Consequently, they will board the train at "World's Worst Pet" and travel to Literacy City (increased reading comprehension), and will be well on their way to meeting their goals and overcoming the obstacles in their learning.
