Give a Kid a Book. Give a Kid the World.

Funded May 24, 2020

My students were able to gain new experiences through the books that you helped purchased. Some students learned about the life of Jude, as a refugee coming to America and other students learned about the life of Jordan, who is a Black student attending a private school. In general, students gained knowledge about these two characters and how they are able to conquer the obstacles that life threw at them.

In my classroom, students are always encouraged to read books that will allow them to experience different cultures and lifestyles outside of their communities. These two novels continued to allow students to learn about other cultures as well as make connections to their own experiences and life.

Students who read about Jordan's experience attending private school enjoyed the novel so much because it is a graphic novel. They enjoyed the plot and the graphics. Students who read about Jude's story enjoyed learning about a part of the world that they know very little about. They had many questions about what life was like in Syria and the culture there. This novel was also written as a poem so students were able to enjoy this style of writing which was different from most chapter books they read. Overall, students enjoyed both novels that you helped to purchase. We are forever grateful.”

With gratitude,
