Having Galaxy tablets in our classroom will really help students in a multitude of ways. Not only will students be exposed to a different form of media with which to consume literary treats, they will also learn how to better use technology in an increasingly technological society. In a community where students do not regularly have access to technology, this project will provide students with hands-on experiences with technology and will make reading that much more interesting for them. Applications like Epic and Raz Kids give students reading opportunities in different forms. For struggling readers, Epic and Raz Kids have options for the program to read to the students while they listen and read along with the story. Epic has a large selection of high-interest books for students while Raz Kids assesses student retention and understanding of the story they read with quizzes at the end where students can earn points. Having tablets in our classroom would be us so much closer to this multi-dimensional aspect of reading.
The goal for our school, and for my classroom, is to increase the love of reading in all students! I want students to view reading as a treat, rather than as a chore. Reading will be the way that third grade students at our school will be promoted to the fourth grade, and since second grade is pre-third grade, it falls upon the second grade teachers to enhance reading instruction that the students receive. Students should not fail because they cannot read, and we are trying to change that at our school. Your donation to this project will bring me that much closer to our goal!
