  • Social Skills Books for Students with Autism

    Funded Aug 6, 2016

These new books are social skills books. These books are to teach my students who are Autistic how to read and handle social situations. Some of the books are about manners, importance of sharing, and how to communicate your wants and needs.

Reading is a huge part of my classroom. In my classroom we do a lot of read aloud. Sometimes my students will read book to a small group and other times I will read to them. They listen to the stories read and are working on retelling the stories main idea, characters, and setting.

All my student's love reading new books. I have a few students who are in love with these social skills books. They are fun stories that are teaching a great message. All of my students love the books and are able connect with the characters and generalize the messages into there everyday lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ridenour

My students have autism and need to work on building different social skills so they can learn to appropriately interact with their peers and adults. These students need to be taught how to follow the rules, have conversations, and being aware of personal space and how they make others feel. Directly teaching these types of skills will teach students how to navigate and read different social situations. I am requesting copies of The Way I Act, The Way I Feel, Enemy Pie, Do Unto Otters, The Recess Queen, Stick and Stone, A Bad Case of the Tattle Tongue, The Worst Day of My Life Ever!, You're Mean, Lily Jean!, and the How to Be a Friend Guide. These books will allow my students social independence and the ability to make friends and not be overwhelmed in social situations. They will be a great resource in engaging my students and getting them excited in learning these different social skills.
