Trying to sit still is difficult for most of my students, but I teach students with special needs. They are constantly fidgeting and off task when required to sit still in a traditional desk. I've observed this first hand throughout the past four years as a classroom teacher. Last year, I implemented something called flexible seating in my classroom. I painted tires and put a cushion in the center, shortened the legs on tables for seating on the floor with a cushion, I have yoga balls and a picnic table with crates for seats. I allow the student to choose the seat that is best for them. This has made a huge difference in their engagement and attitude.
I’m consistently implement interactive learning, and movement into my classroom to help keep my students' focus and attention alive, but they still need more! Students who have attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity issues especially struggle to stay focused throughout the day. The sensory stools that I'm requesting would add more choices for my students, especially those with attentional concerns, to maintain stamina and focus throughout the day. Better focus transpires into more learning and success! By having these seating options on my classroom, they will aid in students reaching their goals and heightening their enjoyment of school.
These wobble stools will be used throughout the entire school day for the majority, if not all, of my students. They will be used at students' seats in place of a traditional classroom chair. The purpose of having these stools as a seating option is to enable my students reduce squirming and fidgeting with student chairs and ergonomic seats that are designed to stimulate thinking and allow continuous, non-distracting movement.
