  • Loving to Read in Science

    Funded Jun 2, 2018

We began reading the Project Mulberry book at the beginning of the school year. At first, I made it mandatory for students to come in, grab the book from our class bookshelf, and begin reading. After a couple of days, students did not have to be reminded about getting the book off the shelf, and when allowed to choose a different book, each student chose to continue reading Project Mulberry. Many of the students have completed this book, written their summaries, and are now selecting other books to read as part of their early morning routine without being prompted. It is also interesting to hear many of the students' conversations about the books they are reading both in my class and in others.

Again, my thanks goes out to each of you who helped to make this goal of mine come to fruition for my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hines

  • Real World Science

    Funded Oct 17, 2017

My students were so excited to finally be able to use their existing technology probes with their Chromebooks by using the GoLink Usb connectors you generously provided through your self-less donations.

The students used them to take light readings from different locations within the scale model of the solar system they created. Through this lab, combined with their use of the light and temperature probes in conjunction with the GoLinks, students were able to see a scaled version of how temperature and amount of light received at different locations within the solar system allow Earth to be habitable.

Students will further use these GoLinks with other tools such as their motion sensors when we examine motion and forces during other LSSS content labs later this year.

Thank you is not enough to express our gratitude for your donation(s).”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hines

  • Hands-on/Minds-on Science Learning

    Funded Mar 10, 2017

Thank you so much for contributing towards our class purchase of rocks and minerals. These materials helped students actually become scientists and they were so excited to conduct the tests to help them determine one mineral from another and to determine minerals from rocks.

They collaborated together during the lab, held accountable talk discussions, peer coached and taught each other. Once before abstract terms became concrete for students as they began to understand vocabulary terms from our unit simply because they were able to see and actually do the tests to determine the properties of their mineral. Students were able to perform hardness tests, luster, streak, determine how the mineral breaks (cleavage or fracture), as well as examine some special properties such as magnetism.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hines

  • Destination Imagination Supplies for Challenge Solutions

    Funded Dec 8, 2016

With the selfless generosity through your giving, the students were able to design and create their own unique solution to their Technical Challenge for the state Destination Imagination competition.

They were able to design and create costumes, a stage with moving parts, paint their backdrop(s) which also rotated, and compete at their competition. This achievement allowed them to develop friendships, team work skills, self-reliance, and higher-order thinking skills.

All of the students participating this year have already stated that they will want to be a part of a D.I. team next year because they were able to be part of a club that meant something to them for the first time ever. Through this experience, students have been able to incorporate their gifts and talents in areas they have not been able to express them before, and they now have a sense of belonging and accomplishment through this extracurricular club.

All of the members are grateful for your helping them complete the parts of their challenge by donating funds for their supplies, and I thank you for helping them to learn about the kindness of strangers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hines

I teach at Westdale Middle School in Baton Rouge, La. I am raising funds for STEM materials to be used in Science and STEM elective classes when my 6th and 8th graders return to school. As many know, the lives of me and my students have been turned upside down. It would be nice to have state of the art lab equipment for hands-on minds-on labs which will assist in bringing normalcy, routine, and a desire to learn. My goal is to raise the entire amount by the end of September 2016. I am requesting temperature probes, Ph Sensors, Pocket Scales, and TI 84 Plus Graphing calculators. These supplies will allow students to work in collaborative groups to collect data as if they are actually scientists within a laboratory setting for Physics, Earth and Environmental Sciences. They will also be utilizing important skills across the curriculum to incorporate data into tables, create graphs using collected data to determine trends, and then analyzing the data to write a lab report to present their conclusions. Anything given is greatly appreciated during this time, and goes toward these requested science supplies and materials needed by our school students who have lost everything in the Louisiana Flooding of 2016. Again, thank you so much for caring for these children who need so much at this time. Mrs. Hines
