Due to budget cuts in my district, all specials including PE were discontinued in our elementary schools. The only exercise my students get is during their scheduled recess times twice a day. I would like to have a class set of pedometers for my second graders and start a Walk 4 Fun program. Our nation is facing a major health issue in the form of childhood obesity. Walking can help my students look and feel better, increase their energy level, sleep better and improve their academic performance. The goal of my program is to get kids moving step by step and hopefully walking will be a part of their daily life. Through the use of pedometers, my students will be able to set fitness goals by the number of steps or the distance in miles they have walked. I believe the pedometers will motivate students to make changes in their exercise regimen. This program will last for the whole school year. Students will also be able to track their data in math by graphing their activity level individually and as a whole class. I also plan to incorporate geography into our miles by letting students decide what state we should walk to and keep track of the places we visit throughout the year. There are many places to explore and it all starts with a few steps! Walk 4 Fun!
