I would like to create a calming corner for my classroom. Understanding that we have some students with sensory processing difficulties, I want them to begin the process of learning how to calm themselves and to cope with their anxieties. By providing a quiet place and giving them proven therapeutic tools the students can remove themselves from the situation before we have an escalation. This will also help the other students to retain their focus. I already have a tent and fuzzy rugs to help create our calming corner. We need a HowdaHug chair to provide a rocking and cradle-like, comforting feeling. We also need a weighted stuffed animal to be used for comfort. The lizard could easily be placed on the lap or the shoulders. The earmuffs will help the child block out noises. All of my students will benefit from the calming corner as they use it to calm their anxieties and refocus. Whether it's anger related or a focus issue, the calming corner would be a place for the student to go for a few minutes. Teaching and learning could continue while the student readjusts. My hope is that as students use the calming center they will learn to be in control of their own emotions and will eventually learn how to regulate themselves.
