Our country is experiencing a major health crisis as the number of overweight and obese youth is growing at an epidemic rate. Furthermore, the achievement gap continues to grow within high poverty schools. After researching solutions to both of these epidemics, I learned that Environmental-Based Education can offer support in both of these areas. I plan on creating a school garden where children can learn Science, Math, Technology, and Engineering while learning self sustaining skills and the importance of eating healthy. My students need to become responsible caretakers. Through gardening, they will have an opportunity to engage in agricultural practices on a small scale, learning about the responsibilities and impacts of land cultivation. To begin this, we need six sets of garden tools, four raised beds, 18 pairs of gloves and various seeds to go with an APES Classroom Set Lab#1. These students will be immersed in 21st century skills by collaborating, communicating, critically thinking and being creative through this process.
